Lawyers’ March Foiled; Violent clashes in various areas
SRINAGAR: Police have used force to disperse a group of protestors outside the residence of senior separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, near Kashmir capital Srinagar.
Mr Geelani had urged people to converge outside his Hyderpora residence from where he intended to lead a procession towards the UN office to submit a memorandum over killings by Indian security forces.
He was already under house arrest, but has now been taken into preventive custody.
The police have also foiled an attempt by lawyers to take out a march.
Police had imposed restrictions on movement of people towards Hyderpora, but witnesses said a large number of residents there took to the streets before noon. Mr Geelani also tried to step out of his residence, but was whisked away to Humhama police station in an official van.
Soon after, the protestors outside clashed with the police who used batons and tearsmoke shells to disperse them
A journalist there told FreePress that the clashes continued for nearly half an hour.
Violent clashes were also reported from Nowhatta and Saraf Kadal areas in downtown Srinagar which continued till late in the evening.
Lawyers, who have struck work in support of Geelani – and also will do on Saturday over his shutdown call – were stopped by the police when the tried to take out a march from from the lower court premises in Srinagar.
Later another group of them managed to gather near the Press Colony, but were detained by the police.
