SRINAGAR: Police today foiled a march by All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC), who wanted to geharo the legislature complex, where session of both Houses was going on. Police later took eight AJKPC leaders into preventive custody.
A large number of sarpanches and panchs, who had come from different parts of the state had gathered at exhibition ground. and tried to march towards assembly to march towards assembly complex where the assembly session was going on.
The sarpanchs are demanding the implementation of 73rd amendment of Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir, the AJKPC leaders said adding we were also protesting against the failure of Panchayati Raj in the state.”
However, the state government had deployed a large number of personnel in and around the exhibition ground to foil march.
As soon as the sarpanch and panches started march, police stopped them and later took eight leaders into custody.
Those arrested included Imtiaz Afzal Beig, Bashir Ahmed Malik, Aftaab Ahmed Beig, Nazir Ahmed Laroo, Bashir Ahmed Rather, Ghulam Hassan Rather, Ghulam Mohidin and Abdul Ahad Chatt.
