Shutdown Continues, Restrictions in Kulgam.
SRINAGAR: Security forces have fired in air and burst teargas shells to disperse demonstrators in Shopian district, where four people were killed in firing by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on September 7.
The protests came as the authorities lifted a four-day old curfew.
However a shutdown continues and protestors shouted slogans demanding that the CRPF camp, whose soldiers killed the four youth, be removed. In Memandar village, residents demanded that the CRPF personnel be arrested.
In nearby Kulgam district, police and paramilitaries have been deployed in strength to prevent protests.
A shutdown is also being observed there in view of the “Chaharum” (fourth day after burial when Muslims offer prayers for the deceased) of a youth, Tariq Ahmed.
Ahmed, a walnut merchant, was one among the four youth shot dead at Gagren on Saturday and buried a day after.
The CRPF maintains that all the four slain youth were militants who had attacked their camp.
But police have said that three of the deceased youths had no previous militant records while the fourth was indeed a Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) foreign militant.
