SRINAGAR: Police have used force to break up protest demonstrations against the death of a research scholar from Kashmir who died in Hyderabad on Saturday.
A joint advisory council of separatists had asked people to march towards Parigam village in Pulwama district to condole with the family of late Mudasir Kamran.
In Srinagar, hundreds of young men marched from the Rajouri Kadal area in downtown city chanting anti-India slogans, witnesses say.
They reached Habba Kadal area, a few kms away from city centre Lalchowk, where the police and paramilitaries fired tear smoke shells to disperse the youth, who in turn threw rocks.
At least one person has been wounded, reports say.
In Magraypora area, less than a mile away from Parigam, police and the paramilitaries used force to stop a protest demonstration from advancing further. Rolls of concertina wire had already been placed to stop any movement towards Parigam.
Hundreds of angry youth threw rocks at the police and paramilitaries, who in turn lobbed tear smoke shells to disperse them, witnesses said.
Three policemen, including two officers – SHO Magraypora and SHO Chadoora – have been wounded.
In Kakapora town in Pulwama also, clashes between protesters and the police and paramilitaries continued till late in the evening.
In Shopian town in South Kashmir reports say over a hundred youth gathered and chanted slogans. But there was no violence and the protesters later dispersed peacefully.
Meanwhile media persons covering the protests in Srinagar say the police beat them up with batons at Habba Kadal. At least one photographer of a local daily has been reportedly injured in the arm.
