SRINAGAR: The chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir has offered a “sincere apology” to the family of deceased Pakistani prisoner, Sanaullah Ranjay.
Ranjay, 52, was serving a lifer at Kot Balwal Jail in Jammu. He was grievously injured in an attack by an inmate on Friday last.
He was shifted to a hospital in Chandigarh where he remained in a critical condition for days. He died this morning.
“Although it’s scant consolation, I’d like to offer a sincere apology to the family of Sanaullah and my sympathies for their loss,” chief minister Omar Abdullah wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter.
The assault on Ranjay came a day after the death of an Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in Pakistani jail. He was fatally attacked by fellow inmates there.
India’s Supreme Court yesterday frowned over Ranjay’s death and expressed concern over lack of security in jails.
It said the J&K government should have anticipated such attacks in view of the Indian prisoner’s death in Pakistan.
The state government has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
Omar Abdullah wrote on Twitter that “While the inquiry will fix responsibility for any dereliction of duty, the fact that this happening at all is a matter of great regret,” Omar said.
