One Killed As Troops Fire on Protesters in North Kashmir

SRINAGAR: One person has died and another wounded after the Army fired at a group of protesters in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, witnesses say.

Tahir Ahmed Sofi received bullets in his head and chest, they say.

At least one young boy has also been hit in the legs.

Police say the Army soldiers opened fire after they came under attack from stone throwing protesters in Baramulla town.

However a resident of the area told freepresskashmir.com over phone “some young boys were teasing the soldiers of 46 Rashtriya Rifles posted at Filtration Plant here and then they fired indiscriminately.”

The district head or the Deputy Commissioner of Baramulla, G.A Khwaja said “we have asked the police to file a First Information Report (FIR) and we may launch a magisterial inquiry.”

Meanwhile violent clashes have broken out in Baramulla chowk. Unconfirmed reports say a couple of protesters have been injured.

Thousands of people, chanting anti-India slogans, have gathered at the Martyr’s Graveyard in Baramulla to bury the body of the late Sofi.

His friend led his funeral prayers, the resident said.

Senior separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani addressed the mourners over telephone.
