SRINAGAR, Sept 10: Authorities in Kashmir say the flood situation is well under control as rains have stopped and the water level is now constant.
Although officials of various department have been asked to remain alert should a flood situation arise, no such alarm has been sounded for people.
“The water level at Sangam has been receding since 4 am. It was 17.6 feet then and now it has reduced to 14.86 feet,” said Mr. Katchkar, an official of the flood control department on Monday, which is constantly monitoring the situation.
The danger mark at Sangam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district is 21 feet, he said.
“At Ram Munshi Bagh in capital Srinagar, the second point where the water level is measured, the river Jhelum maintained itself at a constant 16.3 feet. The danger mark here is 18 feet.”
Katchkar said the water level is expected to come down further, if there was no more rain.
Meanwhile, authorities on Sunday asked residents living in sheds or houses on the banks of river Jhelum to vacate and move to safer places as a precautionary measure.
The valley has been witnessing incessant rainfall since Saturday last.
