SRINAGAR: The upper reaches experienced light to moderate snowfall while plain areas mainly had light rains this morning in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region, where the night temperature witnessed considerable improvement.
However, the sun was playing hide and seek in the region, where the Met department has predicted rain or snow from today as Western
Disturbance (WD), originating in Arabian Sea had arrived through Afghanistan and Pakistan.
A Met spokesman said here this afternoon that light to moderate rain or thundershower would occur at many places during the next 24 hours.
There would be a decrease in precipitation during subsequent two days, he said and warned of isolated heavy rain or snow during the next 24 hours.
The upper reaches, including holy Amarnath cave shrine, its periphery and Sheshnag, Mahaguns and Panjterni besides areas near the Line of Control LoC) in north Kashmir valley experienced light snowfall.
A number of plain areas, particularly in north Kashmir had light rains.
However, due to cloudy sky there was considerable improvement in the minimum temperature in the region.
Against yesterday’s minus 3.3 degrees at Leh in Ladakh region, the minimum temperature was minus 0.3 degree, registering an improvement of three notches.
Similarly at Kargil, a border town on Srinagar-Leh national highway, the minimum was 0.4 degrees against yesterdays minus 0.8 degrees.
So far the lowest night temperature at Leh and Kargil was recorded on November 4 when it minus 8 and minus 6 degree respectively.
The health resort of Pahalgam recorded 4.6 degrees minimum temperature, about five degrees above normal while at famed ski resort of Gulmarg the night temperature was 1.2 degrees a notch above yesterday.
Barring Kupwara, the minimum temperature was above normal elsewhere in the valley. At Kupwara it was 2.4 degrees, a notch below normal.
In the summer capital, Srinagar, the minimum temperature was four degrees above normal.
However, the Met spokesman said the minimum and maximum temperatures will drop below normal again tomorrow.
