SRINAGAR: The National Human Rights Commission has ordered an inquiry after a complaint that dozens of people, including minors, from Chattisgarh were being held as bonded labourers at brick kilns in Jammu and Kashmir.
The commission has asked its director general (investigation) to depute a team for an “on-the-spot inquiry and submit a report expeditiously in the matter”, said a statement posted on the commission’s website.
“A complainant has alleged that the two brick kilns having bonded labourers are located at village Agra Chowk and Purab Pana in tehsil Nawanshahr in Jammu,” the statement said.
The complaint alleged the victims, 42 in number, were from Janjgir Champa district of Chhattigarh.
