SRINAGAR: A prisoner has been murdered by a fellow prisoner in the Central Jail of Srinagar.
A police spokesman said Mohammad Ismail Shah was hit on the head with a stone by Ghulam Hassan Malik while he (Shah) was asleep.
He was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Both the prisoners were facing trial on charges of murder. The deceased was in jail since 2009 while Malik has been there for six years.
But neither of them was among the political prisoners who form majority of inmates in the jail.
The jail superintendent, Mohammad Ayoub told freepress that a magisterial probe has been ordered into the killing of Shah.
He said Malik, who has been segregated from other prisoners after the murder, has not been cooperating with investigation.
Ayoub said the immediate provocation for the killing was not known. He said the jail inmates are given pychiatric help whenever they need it.
Whether Malik was receiving any such treatment is not known.
The deceased was a resident of Churat village in Kulgam district while Malik hails from Chak Saidpora in Shopian district.
