SRINAGAR: Police on Friday said an ambulance was damaged and its driver was injured when a group of “miscreants” pelted it with stones in north Kashmir.
They said five people including three policemen were also hurt when police chased the youth who pelted them with stones in Palhalan area of Pattan in Baramulla district.
Police also say they have arrested four “stone pelters” who were threatening people and and extorting money in Sopore.
Police has registered a case in this regard. This is the first such incident since fresh unrest erupted last month in Kashmir where civilians have attacked an ambulance or medical staff.
A couple of days ago, a group of doctors and paramedics was roughed by the police at Rajouri Kadal in Srinagar citing violation of curfew.
Two paramedics were injured.
Head of the valley’s tertiary care hospital, Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura appealed to let ambulances pass through.
In a separate incident on Thursday, police say they arrested four stone pelters who allegedly demanded money from travellers
“They were threatening the people boarding their cars and extorting money from them by threat and intimidation,” a police spokesman said.
The spokesman said the youth were collecting “Rs 100 to Rs 500 from the car owners depending upon the model and make of the car.”
It was not possible to independently verify the incidents in the curfewed north Kashmir.
