SRINAGAR: An eight-month old baby has died at a hospital in Kashmir capital Srinagar, a week after she was mauled by stray dogs.
Baby Shafia Ahad was sleeping at her home in Shanpora locality of Habak in Srinagar outskirts when dogs jumped in through a window and attacked her.
Her mother told a local news agency, CNS, that the dogs bit her daughter several times.
The baby was shifted to G.B.Panth Hospital where she received 47 stitches on the face. She died on Monday afternoon.
Doctors, who treated her, told CNS that the baby had received the deadly ‘Category III’ bites, and died because of Rabies infection.
Family of the girl, and residents of Habak have accused the ruling National Conference party and Srinagar Municipal Corporation of being “more concerned towards the welfare of dogs than humans.”
Incidents of dog bites, mainly with children, have been rising in Kashmir, particularly the capital Srinagar. Officials have been prohibited from culling canines due to Supreme Court’s directives, after intervention by animal rights activists.
