SRINAGAR, June 14: Police on Thursday claimed to have busted a car-bomber module of the militant group Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), who, they said, were planning to carry out attacks in the city.
“Five operatives of the module belonging to south Kashmir areas of Pulwama and Tral have been arrested,” deputy Inspector General, Srinagar, Syed Ahfadul Mujtaba told reporters.
Mujtaba said these members of the LeT were the same who had set up a car, heavily laden with explosives, near Chanapora area in the outskirts of capital Srinagar. The bomb was however diffused by the police.
“An LeT explosive expert who is a foreigner had devised the car bomb which was detected in time and defused through a controlled explosion in Nowgam area of the city on May 17 by us,” he said.
The group of militants is believed to have been planning to launch a major attack in Srinagar.”The had decided to undertake an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion in the Srinagar city to target law enforcement agencies and strike terror in the minds of general public,” Mujtaba added.
“With their arrest we have successfully averted the possibility of the militants carrying out car bomb explosions in the city.”
