SRINAGAR: A policeman in south Kashmir’s Anantnag town escaped an attempt on his life with what witnesses said was ‘sheer luck’.
Constable Touseef Ahmed was on duty near K.P road in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Friday when an unidentified armed youth approached him and placed a pistol on the cop’s head.
A local news agency, CNS, quotes eyewitnesses as saying that the cop turned pale and stood absolutely still, visibly shocked.
But they say that when the attacker pulled the trigger, the gun developed a defect and failed to shoot.
The gunman then ran away. It is not clear whether onlookers tried to catch hold of him.
“The policeman for a moment fainted and his colleagues gathered around him and took him to General Bus Stand police post where he is deputed,” the agency reports.
A police official while confirming the incident said a hunt had been launched to trace the assailant.
