SRINAGAR, June 27: Life in Kashmir continues to remain disrupted on the second day of a shutdown to protest the destruction of a Sufi shrine in fire on Monday.
Shops and businesses remain closed in many parts across the valley including North Kashmir’s Baramulla and South Kashmir’s Anantnag districts, witnesses said. Traffic too is partially affected with only private vehicles plying on the roads, they said.
In capital Srinagar, an undeclared curfew continues to be in force in at least six police station areas, as the authorities are apprehensive of violent protests.
But in the uptown city, even as commercial activity remained paralysed, public transport was resumed and many educational institutions were also seen functioning.
Tension gripped the valley after a revered shrine of Sufi saint Sheikh Abdul Qadir Geelani’s shrine was gutted in a massive fire on Monday morning. What followed was violent clashes between people and the police at various places.
On Tuesday, the valley was shut due to a strike call by separtist leaders and Islamic scholars. But they had not called for any shutdown on Wednesday.
