SRINAGAR, July 2: The much hotly contested hyped third Mughal Road car rally has come to a tragic end here in the capital, officials of the event said Monday.
A driver died and his navigator was injuredwhen the team number 61 participating in the Enduro category of the rally met with an accident on the climb up to Sinthan Pass Sunday evening.
The team comprised Mr Jitender Shukla and Mr Ashish Mahajan. While Singh died on the spot, his navigator Ashish Mahajan was critically injured and has been admitted to a hospital.
“Jitender Singh lost control of his vehicle near Simthan last evening while on the return leg of the Mughal road rally,” a police official said.
The third Mughal Road Car Rally began here on Saturday with 93 teams including Kashmir’s first motorsport team, Baba Reshi Lions. It is scheduled to be flagged in later in the day. The 600-kilometre long rally passes through the historic Mughal road that was once traversed by the caravans of Mughal emperors to reach Kashmir.
The organizers have contacted the families of both the competitors. The ceremonial flag-in and the prize distribution have been cancelled on account of the mishap.
