SRINAGAR: Shops and businesses remained closed in and around Gaw Kadal area of Srinagar on Monday to mourn the death of nearly 40 protesters, who were killed after security forces fired at them in 1990.
The valley’s business hub, Lal Chowk, Residency Road, Maisuma, Gaw Kadal and other places wore a deserted look, but traffic function normally as did banks and other offices.
On Jan 21, 1990 thousands of people defied curfew and held a protest marched against crackdown on ordinary civilians, barely a year after an armed rebellion against New Delhi erupted.
On Gaw Kadal bridge, security forces opened what witnesses said was indiscriminate fire, killing dozens of them. Scores others were wounded in the shootout.

Separatist leaders, including hardline Syed Ali Geelani and Hilal Ahmad War of the People’s Political Party Monday called for a remembrance shutdown.
Life in other parts of summer capital Srinagar and other towns, however, remained normal.
