SRINAGAR: Muslims in Kashmir thronged mosques and shrines on Monday night to seek the forgiveness of God and the blessings of the Lailat Al-Qadr (the night of power), as Ramadan draws to a close.
Hundreds of thousands of believers offered the “Taraweeh” or night prayers in congregation at Grand Mosques in their respective areas as did others in shrines.
A large number of worshippers attended prayers at the Hazratbal shrine which houses the relic of Prophet Muhammad. A larger still crowd prayed at the Jamia Masjid, the main mosque of the valley.
Muslims all over the world wait eagerly for the 27th night of Ramadan, believed to be the Lailatul Qadr, or the night of power, although scholars differ on the exact date.
It was on this night that the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.
According to the Qur’an, the night is “better than a thousand months.”
In Kashmir, the following day is an official holiday.
