SRINAGAR, Aug 8: A woman has given birth to a baby boy in a taxi in Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, officials said.
Reports say Amreen, a first time mother, gave birth to her son in a vehicle after the gynaecologist at the sub-district hospital turned her away on Wednesday morning saying her due date for delivery was still some time away.
However Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Ganderbal, Dildar Mir says the woman had no labour pains when she first arrived for the check up and was sent back in an ambulance.
“At around ten in the morning she again called the doctor over phone and said that she has developed labour pains. But before the ambulance could reach her house, they had already left in a private taxi,” Mir said.
“It is just co-incidence that she gave birth in the taxi,” he says.
After delivering the baby in the taxi, the mother and the infant were taken back to the Ganderbal hospital.
Both of them were reported to be stable and out of danger, he said.
Authorities have ordered an inquiry into the incident following a public outcry against the “negligent” approach of the gynaecologist.
CMO Mir said he was inquiring into the incident and will submit his report soon after meeting the woman.
