SRINAGAR, July 19: Legislators in Kashmir Thursday gathered at the assembly complex in Srinagar to elect the Indian Republic’s 13th president.
The President of India is elected by voting of the Electoral college comprising elected members of both the houses of Indian Parliament, elected members of each state Legislative Assembly and the elected members of each union territory possessing an assembly.
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Jugal Kishore was the first to cast his vote after the process began in this summer capital.
The state has 87 elected legislators, all of whom are eligible to vote for the country’s president.
Kashmir has been the reason for at least three wars between India and Pakistan and continues to remain the reason for their animosity.
The ruling Congress-National Conference alliance in the state is supporting former finance minister and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate Pranab Mukherjee for the post.
The main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which has 21 legislators in the assembly, has also decided to support Mukherjee.
