‘Kashmir Police Beat Up Doctors, Paramedics’

SRINAGAR: The police on Wednesday allegedly roughed up a team of doctors and paramedics travelling in an ambulance in downtown Srinagar, where a curfew is enforced to prevent violent demonstrations over the killing of a young man by the Army in north Kashmir.

A senior doctor at the Gousia Hospital in Khanyar said that an ambulance ferrying his staff to work was stopped by policemen at Rajouri Kadal in the old city this morning.

“My staff were dragged out and many of them were beaten up by the police. They were told that the police has orders not to let any vehicle pass,” Dr Shaheen told freepresskashmir.com

At least two paramedics have suffered injuries and are being treated at the hospital where they work.

The authorities have imposed curfew in seven police station areas in capital Srinagar besides many other towns of the valley after a young man from Baramulla district, Tahir Ahmed Sofi was killed in Army firing on Tuesday.

In the past announced authorities have declared that the identity cards of all essential services employees will be treated as permission to move under curfew.

Dr Shaheen said he has no idea why the police did not let an ambulance, with clear markings, move ahead.

Dr Shaheen says the hospital administration has not lodged any First Information Report (FIR) with the police, but has written a formal complaint to the district head.

“I have written a letter to the deputy commissioner and also the concerned police officers. Lets see if they lodge an FIR or take action,” he said.
