NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India has announced elections on March 7 to fill up eight seats of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council which are falling vacant following retirement of sitting members.
Eight members of the J&K Legislative Council are retiring on March 16 and they will be elected by members of the State Legislative Assembly. While four of the seats are from Kashmir province, the rest are from Jammu Province of the state.
Announcing the schedule for elections, the EC said the notification for the polls would be issued on February 11 and the last date for filing of nominations is February 18.
After scrutiny of nominations the next day, the last date for withdrawal is February 21.Voting would take place from 10 AM to 2 PM on March 7 and counting will take place the same day.
The eight retiring MLCs are Muhammad Yousuf Taing (NC), Ali Muhammad Bhat (Congress), Muhammad Amin Bhat (Congress), Nizam-ud-Din Khatana (PDP), Rajinder Singh Chib (Congress), Devender Singh Rana (NC), Murtaza Ahmad Khan (PDP) and Naresh Kumar Gupta (Congress).
