Kashmir govt comes to cleft-lipped baby’s rescue

SRINAGAR, Sept 22: Authorities in Kashmir have directed  doctors to perform a corrective surgery upon a 7-day-old baby girl who was born with a cleft lip and abandoned by her parents.

The Director of Health services in the valley on Saturday called a meeting of super specialists and ordered them to take “necessary measures” for the corrective surgery upon the girl who was disowned by her parents at the G.B Panth hospital, the valleys only children’s hospital.

“Dr. Sheikh Tariq, and Dr. Hamidulah Wani, Plastic Surgeons and Dr. Gowher Mufti, Pediatric Surgeon, belonging to Directorate of Health Services Kashmir were assigned the Job to undertake the necessary surgeries at the appropriate stage,” an official spokesperson said.

The baby’s plight came to fore after media reported that nobody in Muslim-majority Kashmir had come to adopt the baby, although Islam is emphatic about taking care of the needy and the destitute, particularly orphans.

There were, however, reports that some NGOs from otside the state had inquired about the baby from the hospital administration and had expressed willingness to adopt the child.

Health minister Sham Lal Sharma was “moved” by the stories about the baby and instructed officials to ensure that the health department takes responsibility, the spokesperson said.

But there’s still no word about who will take care of the baby.
