SRINAGAR, May 26: Police on Saturday foiled the protest march of employees who were planning to move towards the Governor’s house at Raj Bhawan to press for their demands.
Hundreds of employees came out in groups shouting slogans against the government at Abi Guzar near the city centre Lalchowk in Srinagar. Police arrested scores of them and charged at the others with batons.
Today is the last day of a three-day strike by nearly half a million employees in Kashmir who are demanding payment of arrears of 6th pay commission, regularisation of daily wagers, contractuals, anganwari workers and adhoc employees.
They are also demanding a raise in the retirement age from present 58 years to 60 years.
However police had already detained senior members the Joint Consultative Committee-a union of all the employees which called the strike- during midnight raids on Thursday, when the strike began.
Schools and offices in the state continue to remain affected due to the strike.
