SRINAGAR: A curfew is in force in Shopian town of south Kashmir for the ninth day following the killing of four youth by the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
In total five people have been shot dead in the district’s Gagren village as the CRPF killed another youth on Wednesday, prompting the authorities to impose a fresh curfew barely hours after it was lifted.
Police said curfew restrictions are also in place in Qoimoh and Khudwani villages in nearby Kulgam district besides Pulwama chowk in Pulwama district.
Meanwhile a shutdown is being observed in the Kashmir valley over a call by senior separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, against the killings. Geelani had called for a two-day shutdown call since yesterrday.
The government has initiated a magisterial inquiry into the killings and has also directed that the CRPF personnel in Gagren camp be replaced by the state policemen. However many have insisted that the camp be dismantled.
