SRINAGAR, June 18: Kashmir witnessed huge religious gatherings on the occassion of Shab-e-Me’raj. Hundreds of thousands of muslim devotees attended nightlong prayers in different mosques and shrines of the valley.
The largest gathering of people from all parts of the state, including Jammu, was held at the Dargah Hazratbal, which houses the holy relic of Prophet Muhammad, on the bank of famous Dal Lake.
The prayers on Sunday night concluded with a display of the Prophet’s relic after the morning prayers on Monday. The relic will be displayed after each prayer till Tuesday night.
Shab-e-Meraj or the night of ascension is celebrated by Muslims to mark the journey of Prophet Muhammad to the Heavens on the 27th night of Rajab-the seventh month of the Islamic calendar.
All educational institutions and government offices remained closed Monday in view of the occasion.
