Kashmir Border Fire: Warmongering ‘Uncalled for’, Says Mufti

SRINAGAR: The main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday said the escalation in skirmishes on the Line of Control and International Border between India and Pakistan will further add to alienation among people of Jammu and Kashmir.

PDP patron, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed expressed serious concern over the mounting tension on borders saying “the intensity and frequency of ceasefire violations suggest the decade long truce is all but crashing.”

The former Chief Minister said due to the fresh acts of hostility on the borders there have migrations, injuries and deaths. But, he said, war is no option. “Not even the last.”

He said India and Pakistan have endured much worse situations and did not go for war.

“If we could tackle Kargil intrusion without going for a full scale war, if parliament attack could see the longest ceasefire between the two countries coming in the wake of troop mobilization, one fails to understand the logic of any war mongering now in absence of any major provocation.”

He said that there has never been any dearth of hawks in the two neighboring countries who fan the fire of hostility and advocate a ‘bullet for bullet’ policy.

The PDP days ago used the same term particularly for the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his comments demanding that India use force against Pakistan in case they continued with their alleged ceasefire violations.

If we could tackle Kargil intrusion without going for a full scale war, if parliament attack could see the longest ceasefire coming in the wake of troop mobilization, one fails to understand the logic of any war mongering in absence of any major provocation.

Mr Abdullah has since changed his stand and the next day said he favoured peace and that “war was no option”.

Mr Sayeed said those who advocate violence have themselves been at a safe distance from the nearest bullet fired or house bombed.

“The PDP has decided to take out a peace march on November 4. We want to convey a message to the national leadership the concern for the deterioration in security environment and the need to mend it through peaceful means,” he said, adding “the message has to go across to Pakistani leadership as well to spare the state and the region from any fresh adventures.”
