SRINAGAR: The newly-appointed speaker of the Kashmir assembly has agreed to take up for discussion an adjournment motion on the hanging of Afzal Guru on Monday.
Mubarak Gul told news agencies that the hanging was an issue which was being “discussed and debated across the country through different mediums”.
“I think there is no problem if we take it up in the legislative assembly of Jammu and Kashmir too,” he told IANS.
“God willing, the assembly will take these adjournment motions for discussion on the next working day, that is Monday.”
There will be no business in the lower house of the assembly on Saturday
Gul said that he had not rejected the adjournment motion as given notice by the main opposition PDP. “I had no intention of rejecting the motion and had (only) reserved it,” he told KNS.
“It is an important issue which has been raised by the media, apart from the fact that the Chief Minister has also written to the central government.”
Afzal Guru was hanged and buried at Delhi’s Tihar jail on Feb 9. The Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who heads the ruling coalition with the Congress party, washed his hands of the execution saying he did not have to sign his death warrant.
But now there is growing demand by major political parties of the state for guru’s mortal remains to be returned as is by the separatists and the ordinary people.
