ISLAMABAD, Jan 30 (1992): A Kashmiri party which claims to have links with Moslem militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir said Thursday its members would stage a crossing of the ceasefire line next month.
A journey to the “line of control” will start from Rawalpindi, near here, on February 9, the Jammu-Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) said in a statement.
The group will reach Muzaffarabad — capital of Pakistan-controlled Kashmir — on Februry 10 and an undisclosed number of JKLF activists will cross the Chakoti border point the next day, it said.
JKLF promotes independence for Kashmir, a goal incompatible with Pakistan’s stance that Kashmiris should chose between Pakistan and India in a plebiscite.
Pakistan and India have fought two wars over Kashmir and the dispute remains a source of bilateral tension.
More than 4,000 people have died in Indian-controlled Kashmir since early 1990 in violence linked to Moslem insurgency, which India says is fuelled by Pakistan. Islamabad denies the charge.
The chairman of the Muzaffarabad-based JKLF, Ammanullah Khan, said in a statement that he had sent a letter to British Prime Minister John Major on Thursday, the eve of the U.N. Security Council summit in New York.
“These states have a duty to compel India to concede to the Kashmiris their right to self-determination if they really believe in human rights,” Ammanullah said in his letter.
The JKLF leader asked Major, convener of the New York meeting, to circulate his letter among the participants.
He also slammed as “devilish mischief” the Indian claim that Pakistan was behind the JKLF ceasefire crossing.
