J-K Records Slowest Growth in Car/Jeep/Van Ownership: Study

SRINAGAR: The mountainous state of Jammu and Kashmir experienced the slowest growth rate in terms of vehicle ownership in India, a study has said.

Industry body Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) studied trends in many states.

It calculated growth in the use of cars, jeeps and vans as modes of transports in every 1000 households for a period of 10 years, CarTradeIndia.com writes.

D S Rawat, the National General Secretary of ASSOCHAM, spoke about the study titled “Automobile Industry in India: Saturated”.

For the period of ten years from 2001 to 2011, he said, Odisha recorded a phenomenal growth of 293 per cent, far exceeding the over growth rate (105%) of car/jeep/van use.

Jammu and Kashmir figures among the states with the lowest growth rate – along with Tamil Nadu (72 per cent%) and Karnataka (84 per cent%).

“Himachal Pradesh and Haryana are among the fastest growing states in terms of car/jeep/van use in urban and rural centres respectively during the period,” he said.

Interestingly, the study says, the all-India average growth for the use of scooter as transport for the period 2001-2011 was around 96 per cent.
