JAMMU, Sept 27: Two “heavily armed” infiltrators have been shot while trying to sneak into India from Pakistan across the Line of Control (LOC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, Army says.
Soldiers deployed on the LOC in Krishna Ghati sector, about 250 km from state’s winter capital Jammu, noticed a group of armed infiltrators late on Wednesday.
“They (troops) tracked the intruders and challenged them around 3 a.m Thursday,” an army spokesperson said.
The resulting gunfight went on for over an hour, following which “two intruders escaped towards the Pakistani territory while the bodies of two others were recovered from a mine field, about 100 metres inside the Indian territory,” he added.
“The killed infiltrators were in army fatigue. Two AK rifles, one under barrel grenade launcher, large quantity of ammunition and a radio set have been recovered,” the spokesperson said.
The Indian Army has launched a search operation in the area and vigil along the LOC has been stepped up.
