SRINAGAR: Firing has begun at the Line of Control, a militarized line that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
The Indian army says Pakistani troops fired at their posts along the LoC in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir earlier today.
They say they retaliated to the “ceasefire violation”. The exchange of fire was on till last reports came in.
The media from Pakistan have reported that a girl has been killed during “unprovoked” shelling by the Indian army near Batal sector along the LoC.
“Indian troops resorted to small arms and artillery fire in Battal area killing a 10-year old girl and wounding her mother,” a senior security official told AFP.
Other reports say that the ceasefire was “violated” by the Indian troops.
There is a long history border skirmishes in Kashmir, but they have been far less frequent in recent years.
A ceasefire has been in effect along the de facto border since November 2003.
The two south Asian rivals were engaged in a major stand-off in January this year that threatened diplomatic ties.
