SRINAGAR: Expressing concern over the degradation of environment, the Committee on Environment (CE) of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council (LC) said illegal brick kilns and crushers in various areas pose dangerous threat to environment and natural resources.
Officials said here today that CE under the chairmanship of Dr Bashir Ahmad Veeri held a meeting here yesterday which discussed various issues regarding environment degradation.
The committee sought suggestions for the preservation and conservation of natural resources and environment of the state. Master Noor Hussain, Mr Showkat Hussain, Mr Sham Lal, Abdul Majeed Bhat, and Ms Rani Billoria were present in the meeting.
The Committee discussed the issue of illegally established brick kilns and crushers in various areas of the tate which pose dangerous threat to environment and natural resources of the state.
The Chairman of the Committee said the state was eco-sensitive and needed extra attention for its sustenance and conservation, adding that it was the responsibility of all the concerned departments to put in all out efforts for its preservation in a coordinated manner.
The committee also stressed on collective vision and collective intervention regarding environment and suggested holding mass awareness camps for checking pollution.
It also discussed the status of Chinar trees, illegal felling and permission thereof and deliberated upon the declining growth of heritage Chinar trees in the state and also measures being adopted for planting more and more chinars across the state.
On the occasion, Dr Shakeel Ramshoo, Glaciologist gave a detailed description about the environment of the state through a Power Point presentation.
