SRINAGAR, Sept 1: A militant has been killed in a gun battle between security forces and militants in Ganderbal district of Kashmir, police say.
They say a militant, reportedly a foreigner, was killed during a gun fight which started late on Friday in the forests of Chattergul, 40 kms from capital Srinagar.
“A police party has gone to retrieve the body, but we have yet to identify his nationality,” a police officer said.
Intermittent firing is still going on.
Reports say that a group of four to eight militants are hiding in the jungle. The operation is being conducted jointly by the Army and the local police who have cordoned off the entire forest.
Over recent months, there has been a spurt in militancy-related violence in Kashmir, where tens of thousands have died since the early nineties when an armed conflict started, but officials say now violence was largely declining.
The incident comes just days after two militants escaped a cordon and gave slip to security forces at Brinal village of southern Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
