SRINAGAR: Family of Kashmir’s octogenarian separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani has decided to take legal recourse for seeking his release from house detention in New Delhi.
Geelani has been detained at his Delhi residence since the hanging of Muhammad Afzal Guru on Feb 9.
“We have decided to approach the court in Delhi seeking the release of Geelani sahib apart from the reasons behind his detention. We’ll file a writ petition on Thursday”, son in law of Geelani, Altaf Ahmad Shah told a news agency KNS.
He said that Delhi Police Commissioner and Director General of Police Jammu and Kashmir would be made party to the case.
“Through this petition, we’re seeking the reasons for and orders under which he (Geelani) has been detained. Why his house has been turned into prison and why his cell phone has been snatched and is not allowed to meet any one”, he said.
Most of the separatist leaders in Kashmir have either been placed under house arrest or have been taken into custody after the execution of Guru, which caused widespread anger in the valley.
At least three people died during clashes with the police and paramilitaries, one of them after he was hit in the stomach by a bullet.
Another senior leader, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq has been put under house arrest ever since he was released from house detention in the country capital and allowed to return to the valley.
