JAMMU: More than five thousand drivers and passengers in winter capital Jammu have been penalised for not wearing seat belts in just two days, a significant move in the state where such traffic rules are never followed or have rarely been implemented by the police.
During its special drive in last 72 hours, Traffic Police Jammu range ‘challaned’ 5580 vehicles for seat belt violations and fine to the tune of Rs.6.29 lakhs was imposed on the violators, an official spokesperson said on Thursday.
“The drive against violation of seat belt and crash helmet rules will continue till such violations are put to an end,” he said.
Strict action will also be taken against those indulging in triple riding and stunt biking, the spokesperson added.
Meanwhile the traffic department has also informed that the first week of January will be observed as a road safety week.
