Didn’t know my guards attacked traffic cop: Kashmir minister

SRINAGAR, Sept 11: Jammu and Kashmir minister for irrigation and flood control Taj Mohiuddin, whose guards hit a traffic cop on Monday as they were stopped from jumping a red signal, has claimed ignorance about the incident, but said it was “highly regrettable”.

“I was not aware of the incident. I came to know about this incident only after 6 pm,” said Mohiuddin, who is among senior cabinet ministers of the Omar Abdullah headed National Conference-Congress party coalition government.

The state government has suspended the minister’s guards who beat up a traffic policeman, sub-inspector Mohanlal on Monday after he stopped their motorcade from jumping a red signal at TRC crossing, just nearby chief Minister’s residence in Srinagar.

Abdullah on Tuesday morning tweeted that the guards involved in the assault on the traffic cop have been arrested and booked on charges of attempt to murder.

However, ordinary people were angry saying the Mohiuddin could have stopped his guards from attacking the traffic officer.

Mohiuddin said he himslef was amazed at how those meant to protect the law could fight among themselves.

“I don’t know what happened. Let the law take its own course. The case has been registered and now its is for the police to investigate the matter. I don’t know about the incident,” CNN-IBN quoted him as saying.
