SRINAGAR, Nov 29: Authorities have decided to continue the curfew in parts of the capital city for the third day on Friday.
The curfew was imposed in nine police station areas viz Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Safakadal, Khanyar, Rainwari, Nigeen, Lal Bazaar, Zadibal and Parimpora, to prevent clashes between sunni and shia muslims.
Sectarian clashes are rare in the valley of Kashmir, but there were a few incidents in downtown Srinagar on Wednesday.
Fridays are crucial for law and order in the region as people gather in large numbers for afternoon prayers.
A police spokesperson said the situation in the curfew-bound areas remained peaceful on Thursday.
However the Deputy Commissioner or district head of the administration in Srinagar, Baseer Khan told a local news agency KNS that the curfew would remain in force for fear of violence.
