SRINAGAR: A curfew has been imposed in another six towns of Jammu and Kashmir as the communal violence, that caused havoc in Kishtwar, has spread.
Two persons, Arvind Kumar and Bashir Ahmed, were killed in clashes between Hindus and Muslim that took place in Kuleed village, 225 kms from Jammu city, on Friday.
Dozens have been injured while large scale incidents of arson have been reported in Kishtwar where an indefinite curfew continues and the Army is out to restore law and order.
Both Hindus and Muslims have suffered in the clashes.
The authorities late on Sunday imposed a curfew in Jammu and Rajouri districts while later on it was extended to Reasi, Udhampur, Kathua, Samba and Baderwah towns.
The Divisional Commissioner of Jammu division, Shantamanu, has told the Press Trust of India that in the city two vehicles were torched and attempts were made to set fire to two shops in New Plot area.
In Rajouri district, the curfew was imposed “as communal tension ran high,” SSP, Rajouri, Mubassir Lattifee said.
The authorities had already ordered closure of all schools and colleges in the entire Jammu region, where a shutdown was observed on Saturday over a call by Hindu nationalist parties.
The Bhartiya Janta Party and other groups have now extended the call by another two days.
If locals are to be believed, several right-wing activists of the Hindu community also tried to damage a Muslim place of worship in Gujjar Nagar and Peer Mitha areas of the city.
The police, however, did not confirm this.
Jammu division is a Hindu-majority province of the state.
