Hizb Claims Responsibility
SRINAGAR: A paramilitary soldier has been killed in an attack by militants in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, just hours after a similar attack killed a policeman of the counter-insurgency Special Operations Group.
A Police officer told FreePress that militants attacked the escort party of an MLC of the ruling National Conference party, Showkat Ganai, while he attended a wedding at Awneera village.
One paramilitary CRPF soldier died while another has been wounded, he said.
Earlier in the day, militants shot dead a policeman of the counter-insurgency Special Operations Group and wounded another in Arwani village of Anantnag district.
The cop, who was part of a patrol of the SOG, had separated from the group due to some reason when a gunman shot him dead, the Inspector General of Police, Abdul Gani Mir said.
The militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen has owned responsibility for the attacks.
In a telephonic message to local news agencies, a caller identifying himself as Baleeguddin, operational spokesman of Hizb, said guerrillas of the outfit had killed the two cops.
