Cold Persists in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: There is still no respite from the cold as fresh snowfall was experienced on the higher reaches of Kashmir valley while the plains, including Srinagar had light rainfall.

However, the weather will improve and remain dry during the subsequent two days, a met department spokesperson said.

The minimum temperature has dropped at ski resort in Gulmarg and also in Pahalgam. Official sources said the upper heights in Gulmarg, including Affarwat and Khilanmarg received fresh light snowfall last night. 

The other areas in north Kashmir including Kupwara, Bandipora and Bandipora also received fresh light snowfall.

The spokesman said the minimum temperature at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg was recorded minus 9.5 degree, 3.5 notches colder than yesterday when it was minus 6 degree.

Similarly at Pahalgam, the famous health resort in south Kashmir also witnessed colder night against yesterday when it was 0.0 degree against today’s minus 2.4 degree.

Srinagar, despite light rains early this morning, recorded 1.9 degree minimum temperature, one degree above normal.

The maximum temperature was near normal yesterday and today, the spokesman said, adding the sky will be mainly clear tomorrow in Srinagar.

There was one degree drop in the minimum temperature at Leh while it had improved by a notch at Kargil, a border town on Srinagar-Leh National Highway, which remained closed since December last year due to more than ten feet of snow accumulated at Zojila pass.

The spokesman said the minimum temperature at Leh was minus 4.8 degree Celsius against yesterday’s minus 3.6 degree while at Kargil it was minus 8.4 degree against minus 9.6 degree recorded yesterday.
