SRINAGAR: Cocoon production is expected to increase upto 4 lakh kgs during the current fiscal in the Kashmir valley, where due to the concerted efforts of the government, the quality of cocoons produced has substantially improved.
To facilitate the cocoon producers of the valley by providing better marketing facilities for the sale of the cocoon produce at competitive rates, Department of Sericulture organised Cocoon auction marketing camp here yesterday, Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Shah said. Among others, cocoon buyers from outside the state also participated in the camp, where 5000 kgs of cocoon worth Rs 37.50 lakh was sold in the auction market.
He emphasised for setting up of more Income Generating Units (IGUs) in agriculture sector for facilitating the farming community besides improving their socio-economic status.
He said cocoon bank facility for the buyers and producers has been set up wherein 70 per cent interest free loan to purchase the cocoons and to store them in warehouses of the Sericulture department were being made available.
