“They are enjoying Support of Some Officials”
“Will launch awareness campaign”
SRINAGAR: Islamic scholars in Kashmir have expressed concern over what they said were suspicious activities of Christian Missionaries in the valley.
They have also accused “some highly placed officials” of supporting the christian missionaries, who “convert Muslims to Christianity by offering them valuable gifts and other lucrative offers”.
The Majlis e Tahafuz or the committee for protection of Imaan (belief) has decided to launch an awareness campaign and also to bring the matter about in the notice of the authorities.
The Islamic scholars also expressed surprise and said that they saw with suspicion the granting of long stay visa to tourists.
“We respect and welcome tourists across the world. But any anti Muslim activity will not be tolerated,” a statement by the Majlis said.
The Majlis also expressed concern over role of some local NGOs allegedly assisting the christian missionaries.
The scholars say they will hold public meetings to make people aware about proselytism and appealed to other Imams to spread awareness among people during their sermons.
Two years ago a couple of Christian missionaries in Kashmir were ordered to leave the valley after the Grand Mufti, Basheeruddin Ahmed issued a fatwa against them.
The fatwa had come after a video emerged on the internet showing one of the missionaries baptising Kashmiri Muslim youth in a secret ceremony.
