SRINAGAR: The Hindu nationalist Bhartiya Janta Party has called for another two days of shutdown over the clashes between Hindus and Muslims in Kishtwar area of Jammu and Kashmir.
Two people, Arvind Kumar and Bashir Ahmed, have been killed while dozens others have been injured besides large scale arson.
The BJP has demanded that the state’s junior minister for Home Affairs, Sajad Kitchloo be sacked.
A meeting was held in Jammu – it was attended by the BJP leaders besides various trade union leaders and civil society.
The BJP has warned that the shutdown call may continue if the government paid no heed to its demands.
The situation in Kishtwar has polarised Hindus and Muslims in the two provinces of Jammu and Kashmir.
Separatists in Muslim-majority Kashmir valley have blamed Hindu Village Defence Committes for the clashes and have also extended the shutdown by one day.
Jammu province is a Hindu-majority region, although Kishtwar in the province, where the clashes took place, has an almost equal Hindu-Muslim population.
