SRINAGAR, July 15: A shrine of a Sufi saint was gutted in a mysterious fire at Ratsuna village of central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Sunday, triggering protests in the area.
Fire broke out at Baba Haneefuddin’s shrine, made of mostly wood, in wee hours today at Ratsuna village in Beerwah area of Budgam district, official sources said.
A complete shutdown is observed in Beerwah town following the incident, but the situation remained peaceful.
This is the second Muslim shrine to be destroyed by fire in 20 days.
On June 25, the shrine of Dastageer Sahib in Khanyar was destroyed in a fire incident. Almost the entire Kashmir valley was shut for four days over the incident.
Minister for Agriculture Ghulam Hassan Mir expressed grief and shock over the fire incident.
Expressing sympathies with the people of the area, Mir appealed them to not to pay heed on rumours and maintain calm in this hour of sorrow.
