SRINAGAR, July 3: At least a dozen people including girls were injured when police clashed with students who were angro over a humiliating assault on one of their female fellow student by the college principal, police and witnesses said.
Scores of boys and girls of Degree college ganderbal took to streets in protest against what they called rude behaviour by Prof Roshan Ara, the principal of the college. However she denied the charges and accused students of misbehaviour and vandalising college property.
“I only objected to the students not coming in full prescribed uniform,” she said.
But students said that they fumed with anger after Prof Ara, checking whether the students were in proper uniform, objected to a girl wearing sandals and humiliated her infront of her classmates.

“She was in proper uniform. But the only thing was that she was not wearing black shoes because of the hot weather,” a student not wishing to be named said.
“This angered us and we objected to the principal’s behaviour. She did not bother and instead insulted the others also.”
The students, he said, marched towards the office of the district magistarte but all in vain.
“Listen to your principal, he told us,” the student said.
But a “disciplinarian” Prof Ara’s tactics have drawn flak from most of her students.
“We are not school going bachaas (kids) for her to stand at the door and check our uniforms; whether we have worn white shirt and black shoes. And how many colleges in Kashmir or outside force their students to wear uniforms,” a student said.
“She wants us to come sharp by 10 in the morning and never allows any student to leave the premises till 3 in the afternoon even if we don’t have any classes. This is a degree college for heavens’ sake,” she said.
