‘Amendment to J-K Juvenile Act, Commission for Child Rights in Offing’

SRINAGAR: The authorities say that a proposal to amend the state Juvenile Justice Act is under active consideration.

Minister for Social Welfare Ms Sakina Itoo told the legislative assembly that that the government is also considering establishment of a State Commission for protection of Child Rights in the state, an official spokesman said.

Replying to a question by Er. Abdul Rashid in the Assembly, the Minister informed that necessary steps were being taken by the Government to bring the Jammu and Kashmir Juvenile Justice Act at par with the Central Act.

Jammu and Kashmir has its own constitution.

Itoo told the House that establishment of Juvenile Justice Courts at District levels was the jurisdiction of state Law Department and not the Social Welfare Department.

Responding to the supplementary questions raised by Ashok Kumar and Mehbooba Mufti, the minister said that the government is taking due care for counselling of children in juvenile homes, the spokesman added.
