For ‘welfare of dogs’, Maneka Gandhi to visit Kashmir

SRINAGAR, July 1: Prominent animal rights activist and Member Parliament, Maneka Gandhi will be coming to Kashmir to review “dog welfare” measures taken up by the government.

Gandhi is scheduled to review on Sunday the measures undertaken by the ruling National Conference for “welfare of stray dogs”, a local newspaper quoted sources.

The animal rights activist will enquore about the steps being taken by the state government for Animal Birth Control (ABC) program, under which the dogs are being sterilized at the Shuhama facility.

“The kind of care given to the stray dogs and the food they are provided at the dog pounds will also be discussed threadbare at the meeting,” the newspaper Greater Kashmir quoted a veterinarian sa saying.

Dog attacks have of late been a serious concern for the people of Kashmir with around a dozen people, mostly children and women, falling prey to canine bites everyday.

On April 23 the media reported that at least 51 people were wounded when dogs had attacked them in separate places.

A hue and cry among the civil society prompted the authorities to start a sterilisation programme for dogs a couple of months ago.
