Undeclared curfew likely to continue in old parts of Kashmir city

SRINAGAR, June 26: Authorities in Kashmir have indicated that restrictions on the movement of people in Old city will continue for the second day on Wednesday.

Movement of people has been restricted in old Srinagar to pre-empt violent protests over the destruction of the shrine of Sufi saint Sheikh Abdul Qadir Geelani in a fire on Monday.

An official spokesperson said that prohibitory orders under section 144 will remain in force in six police station areas of the city viz Khanyar, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj, Rainawari, Safakadal and Kralkhud “till further orders”.

Section 144 prohibits assembly of more than four people. However it has become a euphemism for undeclared curfew in Jammu and Kashmir state.
