SRINAGAR: The health department in Kashmir says it has performed a rare and prolonged plastic surgery at a secondary-care hospital in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
In a statement, the Directorate of Health Services said doctors at District Hospital Kulgam performed “Hair transplantation for Post-burn baldness of beard” on a 17-year-old youth.
The surgery was conducted by Dr Hamidullah Dar.
The patient, whose name has been withheld, suffered from baldness of beard (Scar Alopecia) due to a burn injury on the right side of his face.
The extensive surgery lasted nine hours. “Whole bald area was covered by transplanting 500 hair follicles,” the statement said.

This is the first of its kind surgery performed in any Government setup in J&K, it added.
The health department says surgeries such as this one are costly and time consuming.
And they say in view of the heavy influx of patients in tertiary care hospitals, this surgery is a huge breakthrough towards conducting advanced procedures in rural areas “and that too free of cost.”
Director Health Services, Kashmir, Dr Saleem-ur-Rehman has complimented the operative team headed on achieving this remarkable feat. He has also assured better logistics to the hospital administration so that advanced surgeries like these be conducted at the hospital.
